The cloud hasn’t died it is manifesting in itsne form as rain, as hail, as snow, as the river, and as the cup of tea in my two hands. It is impossible for something to become nothing. The notion of death is also created by our mind. And when we can no longer see the cloud in the sky, she hasn’t died she has just transformed into rain or snow. She was the water vapor rising up to the sky. Before the cloud appeared in the sky she was not nothing. To be born means that from nothing you become something, but that is not the case with the cloud. But the ultimate nature of reality is that nothing is born and nothing dies. However as soon as we think there is birth, it implies there must be also be death. The notion of birth is created in our mind. Here is an excerpt from one of my favorite of his books on one of my favorite sutras.įrom The Other Shore: A New Translation of the Heart Sutra with Commentaries I am reminded today of the beautiful simplicity of this practice that he has shared with so many in this world, and of the unique and almost child-like way he could translate the densest texts and teachings into soft streams of wonder. I am genuinely heartbroken and moved by the recent passing of one of my very favorite Buddhist teachers and writers, Thich Nhat Hanh.
